Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard feels Manchester United and Arsenal are the favourites amongst the English clubs to drop into the Europa League.

Amongst the four Premier League outfits in the Champions League, only Manchester City have managed to book their place in the knockout rounds of the tournament with one group stage game remaining.

Chelsea, who are top of their group, will welcome FC Porto at Stamford Bridge on matchday six, while Manchester United and Arsenal face tough away encounters.

The Red Devils will have to win against group leaders Wolfsburg in Germany to be sure of qualification, depending on results elsewhere, and Arsenal need to win by two clear goals away at Olympiacos to progress in the tournament.

And with the third-placed team in every Champions League group dropping down to the Europa League, Gerrard thinks Manchester United and Arsenal may join fellow English clubs Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in the second tier of the European competition.

“I think Manchester United have got a very tough game, going away to Wolfsburg. They have got a fantastic home record”, he said, working as a pundit on BT Sport.

“And Arsenal as well, going over to Greece and I think to win by a couple of goals against Olympiacos is a big task as well.

“So you can probably say that they are the two favourites to drop into this competition [the Europa League].”
