Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has lavished praise on striker Christian Benteke and feels the Belgian provides something different to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Belgian forward scored the winner against Bordeaux last night at Anfield to book Liverpool’s place in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Benteke has struggled with injuries since arriving at Liverpool in the summer, but is finally getting into his groove under the tutelage of Klopp on the red half of Merseyside.

Gerrard is a fan of the striker and feels the forward adds a different dimension to Liverpool’s game with his big presence up front. The former Red also believes his ability in the air is also a brilliant option for the side.

The LA Galaxy midfielder also pointed out that Benteke is not a limited player and last night’s winner showed a different side to his game, which depends on a good touch and finishing ability.

Gerrard said in his role as a pundit on BT Sport: “Benteke certainly gives Liverpool a different option.

“He has got that physical presence, that hold-up player; he makes average crosses into good crosses because he is great in the air.

“But as you can see with the goal that he has got an unbelievable touch for a big guy and the finish was worthy winning any football match.”

Benteke will be hoping that he can build on his recent performances and cement his place in the Liverpool starting eleven.
