Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason claims that midfield competition is driving his team-mates on after Spurs grabbed a 1-0 win in Azerbaijan against Qarabag in the Europa League last night.

A Harry Kane header was enough to help guide the White Hart Lane outfit to victory over Gurban Gurbanov’s side.

The victory ensured Spurs’ qualification for the knockout stage of Europa League and a point from the final game of the group stage would ensure that Mauricio Pochettino’s side progress as group leaders.

For Mason, a pleasing aspect of Spurs’ current run of good form is the fierce competition for places at White Hart Lane.

The midfielder believes that such a wealth of options at the club is testament to how far they have progressed in recent years.

He told Spurs TV: “Yes. It [competition in midfield] is driving us all on; of course we want to be starting, to be playing in every game and Chelsea is a massive game in the weekend.

“I think it just shows how far we have come, the fact that we have got players who could come in these games and perform at the highest level.

"So it's exciting."

Pochettino’s men host struggling Premier League title holders Chelsea on Sunday and they will be looking to extend their 12-match unbeaten run in the league.
