Jan Vertonghen feels Tottenham Hotspur's defenders need to be at their best to stop Chelsea’s Diego Costa from scoring on Sunday.

The Spain international enjoyed a successful debut campaign in England after joining from Atletico Madrid last summer.

Costa managed to score 20 goals in 37 games and helped the Blues to win the Premier League and the League Cup last term.

However, the 27-year-old has struggled for form in the present campaign, having managed to score just four goals in 17 appearances in all competitions.

But Vertonghen considers Costa one of the best strikers in the division and hence wants Spurs’ backline to be constantly vigilant against the former Atletico Madrid man at White Hart Lane.

“He’s good. He keeps you switched on”, the Belgian explained to the club’s official site.

“He’s a very good striker and we will have keep ourselves going against him. He’s one of the best in the league and we’ll have to be at 100 per cent to stop him.”

Costa, whose present deal with Chelsea runs until 2019, returned to goalscoring form by netting the only goal of the game against Norwich City last weekend.

He also has nine caps and a solitary goal for Spain to his name.
