Steve McClaren admits that Newcastle United are in a relegation battle after they were crushed 5-1 away at Crystal Palace today.

The Magpies did take the lead at Selhurst Park through Papiss Cisse with just ten minutes on the clock, but then saw James McArthur level it up only four minutes later.

Crystal Palace then took the lead through Yannick Bolasie in the 17th minute, while Wilfried Zaha made it 3-1 in the 41st minute to give the Eagles daylight.

Bolasie grabbed his second in the 47th minute as Newcastle crumbled, while McArthur scored his second in injury time to complete a miserable trip to London for the Magpies.

And McClaren is pulling no punches, conceding that Newcastle are now fighting for their lives in the Premier League.

"We've got 25 games to go", he told Sky Sports.

"We're in a relegation fight, there's no doubt about it.

"We have to work hard on the training ground tomorrow morning."

McClaren does believes his side started the match well however, but were then undone by individual errors.

"We made individual errors. It was 3-1, the killer goal was the fourth after half time. We wanted a reaction. I think we got that, the players were focused, ready, we got the first goal.

"Then we made some errors and never got back into the game. It's about working for each other, covering for each other, winning the duels.

"After the third goal we didn't do that and we can't have that. That's not what the fans want", McClaren added.
