Leeds United boss Steve Evans says he is working hard behind the scenes to ensure that starlet Sam Byram signs a new contract with the club.

Byram is out of contract at Elland Road at the end of the season and knocked back an offer made to him in the summer to extend his stay.

Evans, a firm fan of Byram, has been reluctant to put the right-back in his starting eleven while his future at the club is unclear.

And he insists he is working hard to bring the club and player together to restart talks over a new contract.

The head coach revealed he is under the impression that progress will be made on Monday.

"I'm trying so hard behind the scenes with Sam; I don't think people see it", he said on BBC Radio Leeds.

"I'm trying so hard to get the people from both sides around the table.

"I spoke to Sam at length on Friday morning about it. And he tells me there is something going to be getting done Monday.

"So I'm trying desperately hard to make that happen. But I can only take the horse to the water", the Scot added, indicating Byram will need to play ball.

Byram was an unused substitute for Leeds in their 1-0 Saturday defeat at QPR in the Championship as Evans preferred other options off the bench to try to get the Whites back in the game at Loftus Road.
