Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has ripped into Italian defender Giuseppe Bellusci for his poor performance against QPR on Saturday.

Bellusci, a controversial figure amongst Leeds fans, was named in the starting eleven for the Whites' 1-0 defeat at Loftus road against the R's.

Whelan was less than impressed with Bellusci's showing and argues he was regularly being beaten for pace, while his distribution was not up to the mark.

Writing in his Yorkshire Evening Post column, Whelan explained: "In midfield, we need a general, we need a commander and we need a very strong, no nonsense centre-half who is going to dictate the game, who is going to be aggressive and who is not going to play the way Giuseppe Bellusci played on Saturday – trying to half-volley balls out.

"His distribution was shocking and he was getting beaten for pace", he added.

Whelan feels that Liam Cooper had a decent enough game at centre-back, but claims the defender needs a better quality partner than Bellusci.

"Cooper had a very solid game and he was the best out of the two centre-halves by a stretch but he needs help and he needs someone next to him that is going to be just as consistent", he said.

Bellusci was linked with a return to his native Italy through the summer transfer window, but ended up staying put at Elland Road.

The Italian has been involved in several spats with Leeds fans, notably telling critical supporters that while they were resting over the summer, he would be working to return from injury.

Bellusci has often been criticised for his poor performances since he joined the Whites.
