Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been savaged by Dutch legend Willem van Hanegem for spending €300m on new players, but serving up football without fun.

The Red Devils currently sit in third in the Premier League, one point behind leaders Manchester City. However, the Old Trafford outfit’s lack of attacking threat has been evident this season.

Van Hanegem, a former Feyenoord midfielder, believes Van Gaal’s present style of football takes the fun out of the game.

The 71-year-old labelled Manchester United’s recruits under Van Gaal ‘a bunch of nitwits’.

The three-time Eredivisie champion insists that he has never been a fan of defensive football and believes that a lot more should be expected from a team who have spent close to €300m since Van Gaal took charge in the summer of 2014.

Speaking in an interview with Dutch daily AD, Van Hanegem said: “If you have to spend €300m, you would not buy such a bunch of nitwits.

“If you work on giving nothing away at the back, then you do so at the expense of your football up front.

“Maybe it does not matter to others, as long as it yields points.

“But I don't like it. I am a fan.

“If you invest so much, we are allowed to expect something.”

The Red Devils have only lost twice this season, but have been criticised for playing boring football.

Six out of the last nine fixtures have yielded draws for the Old Trafford outfit, while they have also been involved in five 0-0 draws so far in this campaign.
