Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was relegated to the bench for his side’s 2-0 loss against Atalanta in Serie A last night, after the Pole was caught smoking following the 6-1 humiliation at the hands of Barcelona, it has been claimed.

The 25-year-old, currently on loan from Premier League giants Arsenal, started in goal against Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday night and watched helplessly as the trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar tore apart the Giallorossi in a clinical display.

Following the 6-1 loss, Szczesny confessed that the Blaugrana’s performance was ‘beautiful to watch’ and termed it ‘ridiculously good’.

According to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Rudi Garcia dropped the Polish shot-stopper for the clash against Atalanta as the 25-year-old was caught smoking with a team-mate following the humiliating defeat against the Catalan giants.

It is not the first time that Szczesny has been embroiled in a controversy regarding smoking. The Pole was caught smoking in the showers, following Arsenal’s defeat at the hands of Southampton last year.

The Pole lost his starting berth to David Ospina in the aftermath of this incident and was also fined £20,000 by manager Arsene Wenger.

Szczesny was replaced by Morgan De Sanctis in the Rome outfit’s goal on Sunday and it remains to be seen when the Pole will return to Garcia’s starting line-up.
