Liverpool midfielder James Milner has insisted that his side are taking the League Cup seriously, ahead of their quarter-final match against Southampton on Wednesday.

The Reds, whose last trophy came in the form of a League Cup triumph in 2012, defeated Bournemouth 1-0 in the previous round of the competition in October.

And Milner insisted that Liverpool are aiming to go all the way in the domestic cup competition this term.

The England international, who won the League Cup with Manchester City in 2014, feels winning the trophy by February or March next year may provide Liverpool with a big boost for the remainder of the campaign.

“It is a great chance of a trophy”, Milner told the club’s official site.

“The League Cup gets some bad press at times for whatever reason, but if you ask anyone they would take a League Cup this season.

“We are one game away from semi-finals and then a shot at Wembley. It comes around quickly but it is a great competition. I have been lucky enough to win it and hopefully I can win it again.

“It is the first competition you can win this season. No one will be complaining if we are sat there in February or March with a trophy in the cabinet with plenty more games to go.

"Everyone would be delighted with that.”

Milner, who scored Liverpool’s winner from the spot in the 1-0 win over Swansea City at the weekend, joined the Merseyside giants from Manchester City in the summer.

The 29-year-old has thus far made 17 appearances in all competitions for the Anfield outfit, scoring three times.
