Queens Park Rangers midfielder Leroy Fer is confident that Memphis Depay will respond to criticism with his feet for Manchester United.

The Dutch winger joined the Red Devils from PSV Eindhoven, but after a consistent run of poor performances, Depay was consigned to the bench earlier this season and is now fighting with Jesse Lingard for a place in the starting eleven.

The 21-year-old also received heavy criticism after the Netherlands failed to qualify for next summer’s European Championship and his commitment towards the national team was questioned.

QPR midfielder Fer sympathises with Depay and feels he has received some harsh criticism. While the Dutchman admits that his compatriot has been inconsistent, he is confident the winger will fight back.

The Dutch international backed Depay to respond to his criticism with performances on the pitch.

Fer told De Telegraaf: “Memphis has received a lot of criticism from the outside.

“He has suffered some ups and downs but believe me, its okay with him and he’ll be fine; at least I think so.

“I think it’s time he let his feet do all the talking.”

Despite the recent criticism of his performances, Depay’s numbers in his first season at Manchester United are not believed to be too shabby.

He has scored five goals and provided four assists in 19 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.
