Real Madrid are probing at the possibility of signing their former player Xabi Alonso from Bayern Munich, according to Spanish outlet Vozpopuli.

The Spaniard, whose present contract with the Bavarians is set to expire in the summer, joined the club from Real Madrid in 2014, but has recently been linked with a return to another of his former sides in the shape of Liverpool.

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola made a special effort to sign Alonso, who shares a great rapport with his compatriot.

But with Guardiola reportedly looking for a fresh challenge after the conclusion of the present campaign and the midfielder wanting a two or three-year contract extension, Alonso is also expected to follow him out of the Allianz Arena.

However, the 34-year-old may change his decision if Carlo Ancelotti succeeds Guardiola at Bayern Munich, it has been claimed.

Alonso, who played under Ancelotti at Real Madrid, shares a good relationship with the Italian.

On the other hand, Real Madrid have to act quickly if they wish to bring the former Liverpool man back to the Bernabeu Stadium.

The Spanish giants could be barred from two transfer windows by FIFA for irregularities in the recruitment of homegrown players.

As a result, Real Madrid may look to wrap up a deal for Alonso as soon as possible, preferably in January.
