Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn knows that if he keeps up his current goalscoring rate he will have around 40 goals by the time the season ends, a total he admits he has not even scored in his entire career to date.

Waghorn's career has taken off since he landed at Ibrox in the summer and so far the powerful hitman has 19 goals to his name for Mark Warburton's men.

His first target is to get to a minimum of 20 goals before the new year, something which will be made slightly harder following yesterday's postponed game against Raith Rovers, though still something few would bet against Waghorn doing.

"It's [20 goals] a target that I wanted to hit early on. Things have been going well, though I've not really scored as many as I wanted in the last few weeks, I've had a few chances", he told Rangers TV.

"But it was important to get our form back on track. I think it was important we did that going into the busy Christmas period", Waghorn continued.

"I've had a few clear cut chances where I could have scored a few more goals, but that's football.

"I'm still scoring and chipping away at the tally."

Asked about whether he has bagged 40 in a season before, a tally Waghorn is well on course to hit at his current scoring rate, the striker exclaimed he does not think he has bagged that many in his entire career.

"No [I’ve never scored 40 in a season]. I don't think I've scored that many in my entire career to be honest!

"It would be nice, but I'm just going to focus on each game and see how it goes. I'm going to try and get as many as I can.

"I spoke to people and said I wanted to get to 20, 22 by 1st January and then start again. Let's see how it goes. I've got a few more games to get some more goals", Waghorn added.

Rangers are now next in action against Morton at Ibrox in a Scottish Championship fixture on Saturday.
