Rangers right-back James Tavernier has revealed his footballing idol is Leeds United legend Lucas Radebe.

Radebe made over 250 appearances for the Whites during his eleven-year long spell with the Yorkshire outfit and established himself as a club legend.

During Radebe’s captaincy the Elland Road outfit finished fourth and third in the Premier League in 1998/99 and 1999/00 respectively.

The South African defender also guided his side to the semi-final of the Champions League in 2000/01, where they were eliminated by eventual runners-up Valencia.

Speaking in a candid interview with Rangers TV, Tavernier, who started his career with Leeds United, could not help but show his admiration for the South African and said: “Lucas Radebe [is my footballing idol].

“When I was growing up he was the Leeds captain.

“For a time period they had a great team there, the likes of Rio [Ferdinand] came into the team, but he was the captain, known as the chief.

“So, I would have to go with him, he’s always been an idol.

“I’ve always liked him and he was a defender as well.”

Tavernier did not make the grade at Elland Road, but has established himself as an integral part of Mark Warburton’s side since arriving at Ibrox from Wigan Athletic in the summer.

The Leeds United youth product has scored ten goals in 23 competitive appearances for the Gers so far this season.

Warburton’s men sit comfortably at the top of the Scottish Championship, three points ahead of second placed Hibernian.

But the Gers squandered the opportunity to widen the gap at the top of the Championship on Saturday, when they drew against Morton at home.
