Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has passed on writing his usual Monday morning blog, instead using the opportunity to call for unity at a difficult time for the Red Devils.

Louis van Gaal's men went down to a 2-0 defeat at Stoke City on Boxing Day to make it four successive defeats for the side and pile further pressure on the Dutchman.

The Red Devils have now fallen out of the Premier League's top four and face a crunch home match against Guus Hiddink's Chelsea later today.

For Mata, it would be inappropriate for him to pen his usual Monday morning blog and he has instead taken the opportunity to call for unity at Old Trafford.

Mata wrote: "This is not the time to write or to read since so many things have been said in these days.

"It is time to stand together and change this run – I am sure of that.

"Both you and us want the best for the club and the best way to achieve it is through unity. Thank you for your support", Mata added.

Mata will be up against his former club when Chelsea come to visit Old Trafford and the Spaniard will be desperate to help his side avoid another defeat.

Van Gaal has increasingly been tipped for the sack, with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho mooted as the leading contender to replace the embattled Dutchman.
