Newcastle United have opened talks with Henri Saivet over a switch to St. James' Park this month, it has been claimed.

The Magpies have been linked with the 25-year-old midfielder and have now made good on their interest as they seek to snap him up.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, citing a source close to Saivet, Newcastle have opened talks with the player ahead of a potential switch.

Steve McClaren's struggling side are firm fans of the midfielder, but will have to come to an agreement with Bordeaux as Saivet is under contract with the club until the summer of 2017.

The midfielder's asking price is mooted to be in the region of €4m, well within reach for Newcastle.
