Former Real Madrid manager John Toshack believes Rafael Benitez will not return to football management before the summer.

The 55-year-old Spaniard was sacked by Los Blancos president Florentino Perez yesterday following the 2-2 draw against Valencia on Sunday.

Legendary French midfielder and Real Madrid Castilla manger Zinedine Zidane has been appointed the Benitez's successor and will make his managerial debut against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Benitez was appointed as the Real Madrid manager in the summer to take over the reins from Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked after a trophyless last season.

Los Blancos find themselves in third position in the league table, four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid and two points behind holders Barcelona.

The Spaniard became the 10th manager to be sacked by Perez during his 12 years at the helm of the club.

Toshack, who twice managed Real Madrid, believes Benitez was never going to last at Madrid and the 55-year-old will take some time off before returning to football management.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Radio Wales Sport, Toschak said: "Benitez was up against it right from the off.

"Right from the minute he walked through the door something was not quite right.

“I don't think his face fitted.

"I think he'll be looking to take a bit of a rest, probably until the end of this season and maybe look at something next pre-season."
