Sunderland have inched closer to roping in Jan Kirchhoff after Bayern Munich left the defender out of the club's mid-season trip to Qatar.

The struggling Premier League outfit have identified the out of favour Bayern Munich centre-back as a possible January signing.

The Black Cats are currently 19th in the standings with 15 points from 20 games, and Sam Allardyce’s team are desperate for fresh faces to help the club keep their Premier League status intact after the end of the season.

As a result, Kirchhoff was not part of Bayern Munich’s 29-man squad which left for Doha today, with the Bavarians confirming that the German is currently pushing for a move away from the Allianz Arena.

“The travelling party does not include Jan Kirchhoff, who is away with his agent concluding negotiations for a possible transfer”, a statement on Bayern Munich’s official site read.

Kirchhoff, who joined Bayern Munich from Mainz in 2013, spent the previous season on loan at Schalke.

The defender’s present contract with the Bundesliga champions runs until the summer; Kirchhoff has just made one substitute appearance for a mere few seconds in the present campaign.

He is yet to earn a senior cap for Germany but has represented the nation at various youth levels.
