Leeds United striker Lee Erwin is fastening his belt three notches lower thanks to the fitness regime at the club, head coach Steve Evans has revealed.

Erwin was in line to feature for Leeds against Rotherham United in their FA Cup tie on Saturday, but the Scot missed the 2-0 win after injuring his back in training on Thursday.

Evans is hopeful that Erwin, who attended the game against the Millers, will be fit to return soon and expressed his delight about the striker's fitness.

He told his post-match press conference: "Lee Erwin tweaked his back on Thursday, so we knew from Thursday [he couldn’t play against Rotherham]. The medical staff have described it as a back spasm – I've never had one, but they are meant to be very painful.

"I saw Lee come into the ground; may I say looking a bit fitter than when I arrived, I think he's gone down about three notches on his belt", Evans continued.

"But more importantly he said his back was much, much improved and hopefully we'll be able to get Lee back out there."

Evans was beaten by Leeds to the signature of Erwin last summer when in charge at Rotherham, as his predecessor at Elland Road, Uwe Rosler, hoovered up the Scot.

But Rosler quickly found no use for Erwin, who was restricted to turning out with the club's Under-21s and even loaned out to League One side Bury before Evans took charge.
