Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is confident that Real Madrid's transfer ban will have little effect on David de Gea, who almost joined the club last summer.

The Spaniard is a long term target for Los Blancos, and they almost got him on transfer deadline day in September, before the move fell apart because of their failure to file the necessary paperwork with the concerned authorities in time.

After spending the first month of the season banished from the squad, De Gea returned to the team and even signed a new long term contract with Manchester United to pledge his future at Old Trafford.

While the Red Devils have been inconsistent this season, the 25-year-old has remained in pristine form and has continued to make great saves to rescue the team from unwanted situations.

There was a suggestion that Real Madrid would come back for De Gea next summer and finally get their man, but with FIFA banning the club from registering new players for the next two transfer window, it looks increasingly likely that the Spaniard’s immediate future lies at Old Trafford.

However, Van Gaal stressed that the recent events will have no bearing on De Gea and the goalkeeper is happy with life at Manchester United.

When asked whether the Real Madrid transfer ban will affect De Gea, the Dutchman said in a press conference: “I don't know, because I don't think that kind of thing plays in the mind of David de Gea and I have never thought.

“That was in the period before the transfer period, but now I am seeing David de Gea who is enjoying being here at Manchester United and playing good games.”

De Gea has made 25 appearances for the Old Trafford outfit this season, keeping eleven clean sheets and conceding 25 goals.

His current contract with the club runs until 2019.
