Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy has issued a put down to Leeds United head coach Steve Evans, following comments made by Evans following his side's 2-1 defeat at Portman Road on Tuesday night.

A late Brett Pitman goal brought Leeds' eight-game unbeaten run to an end and McCarthy is sure his side were worthy winners in the game.

Evans though was quick to insist there was not a great deal between the sides, arguing if Ipswich are what is required to get into a playoff spot then he is confident he can rise to the challenge at Elland Road.

The Leeds boss also labelled the referee's performance "garbage" and McCarthy has wasted no time in hitting back, saying that self-publicists are always able to talk a good game.

He was quoted as saying by the East Anglian Daily Times: "He can talk can’t he? He certainly gives his jaw some exercise… I don’t know what else.

"I thought we were excellent on Tuesday night and all the stats point to that. I don’t understand why people do it. Self-publicists talk a good game.

"We played Portsmouth on Saturday and they battered us. I’m honest about that. I’m not happy to say that, I’d prefer not to be saying it, but they were great.

"If we get beat and don’t play very well I’ll say that. Why does it have to always be some outside influence that is the reason why you lose instead of the opposition being good?"

And McCarthy, continuing his savaging of the former Rotherham United boss, insisted that Evans has difficulty in dealing with his side losing, something he knows the Scot has not experienced of late.

"It’s great when you’re on a good run. You can be really magnanimous in being undefeated and winning games, that’s great, but a little bit of honesty and integrity, I find, is really welcome. Not everybody is that way unfortunately."
