Newcastle United new boy Jonjo Shelvey says he is shocked that the Magpies are in a relegation battle after helping his new club to a 2-1 win over West Ham United at St. James' Park this afternoon.

Shelvey was in fine form on his debut and made an instant impact as the Magpies overran the Hammers early on in the Premier League contest.

It took just six minutes for Newcastle to take the lead when Ayoze Perez hit a low shot to make it 1-0.

A second came in the 15th minute through Georginio Wijnaldum, who side-footed into the back of the net from close range to make it 2-0 following a cross, which came about as a result of a superb 60 yard Shelvey pass.

Shelvey had a hand in both goals and even a Nikica Jelavic goal for West Ham in the 49th minute could not deny the home side, who really should have won by a larger margin, Hammers goalkeeper Adrian making a number of stops from Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Newcastle are now two points clear of the relegation zone and Shelvey says he is shocked they even find themselves in such a position as he rates the players at the club.

Speaking on the BBC's Final Score programme, Shelvey said: "I'm very shocked that this team is in and around it considering the players that are in that dressing room.

"It's a pleasure to play with them. They know where your passes are going to be and things like that."

He also saluted the Magpies for making him feel at home following his switch from Swansea City.

"So it's not been hard.

"Normally it's hard coming into a new team and slotting in straight away, but I feel straight at home and I think that's a credit to the players and the staff that they've got here."
