Former Chelsea and Celtic striker Chris Sutton says he is shocked that Swansea City agreed to sell Jonjo Shelvey to Newcastle United after watching the midfielder put in a superb performance for the Magpies today.

Making his debut for Newcastle, the former Liverpool midfielder had a hand in both goals as the Magpies beat West Ham 2-1 to boost their hopes of pulling away from the drop zone in the Premier League.

Sutton was hugely impressed with what he saw from Shelvey and cannot get his head around Swansea choosing to sell the midfielder to a side they are battling with to claw their way clear of trouble.

Speaking on the BBC's Final Score programme, Sutton said: "Why Swansea sold him I still don't know. I think they are absolutely mad selling him to relegation rivals.

"He pulled the strings. He's a player. I look at Swansea, they have [Jack] Cork and [Leon] Britton and for me he's a better footballer than them", he added.
