Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson believes Robert Lewandowski is a far-fetched dream for the Reds, while suggesting that an alternative in the shape of Jamie Vardy is not a perfect fit for the club.

The Merseyside giants, who started without a recognised forward in the 1-0 loss to Manchester United yesterday, are currently struggling in the striking department.

Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Danny Ings are currently all out injured, leaving Christian Benteke, who is not ideally suited to Jurgen Klopp’s style, as the only fit striker.

And it has been suggested in some corners that Liverpool are looking to bring in Bayern Munich hit-man Lewandowski, who has previously played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, or the Premier League’s joint top-scorer Vardy from Leicester City to bolster their goalscoring prowess.

But Lawrenson, who insisted that Lewandowski will never quit Champions League football for a move to Anfield, feels Vardy would struggle to make his mark at a club of Liverpool’s stature.

“Let's get it right. You're not going to get the Lewandowskis of this world at all, they are all in the Champions League”, he said on LFC TV after the defeat to Manchester United, while replying to suggestions that Liverpool should get Lewandowski or Vardy.

“Vardy? I'm not sure, because playing for Leicester is far easier than playing for Liverpool.

“I don't think any of those teams [Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City] would take him. I seriously don't think they would.

“It's just different when you're playing in a better team because teams just sit back against you.”

Liverpool, who are currently ninth in the standings with 31 points from 22 games, have managed to score just 25 goals in 22 Premier League games this season.
