Rangers winger Barrie McKay believes that his loan spells with Morton and Raith Rovers helped him witness the other side of football.

The 21-year-old winger has been heavily involved in Mark Warburton’s side this season and has made 28 appearances for the Gers, scoring five goals and picking up nine assists.

McKay is close to agreeing a contract extension with the Gers as his current contract expires at the end of next season.

The 21-year-old feels that the loan spells benefited him as he picked up some valuable first team experience.

McKay highlighted that being loaned out made him feel unwanted at Ibrox, but thanked Raith and Morton for wanting him.

McKay, who has been at the club since 2011, believes that the loan spells helped him witness the other side of football, away from the monumental Ibrox and pristine training facilities of Murray Park.

Speaking in an interview with Press Association Sport, McKay said: "Being sent out on loan obviously benefited me because I got to go out and pick up some experience.

"But you do feel you're not really wanted at Rangers at the time and that you're not really needed.

"But at least I felt Morton and Raith wanted me when I went there.

"I got plenty games under my belt and got to see the other side of football that you don't see when you're training at Murray Park or playing at Ibrox."

The winger will be third Gers player to recently sign a contract extension with the club, after Jason Holt and Andy Halliday, who extended their contracts last week.
