Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has stressed that it was important that the club signed up Simon Mignolet on a long term contract to protect his future value.

The Belgian goalkeeper recently signed a new five-year deal and Jurgen Klopp also reaffirmed his faith in his custodian, despite some poor performances in the last few weeks.

The error prone goalkeeper has been blamed for some of the goals Liverpool have conceded this season, but Reds legend Lawrenson doesn’t see a problem in the club signing him up on a new long term contract.

He indicated that the club could be in the market to sign a better goalkeeper and signing Mignolet on a long term contract means that it will protect his future value, should the Belgian want to leave.

The Reds legend, following last night's win over Exeter City, said on LFC TV: “They are right to sign him on a long term contract because if eventually in six or 12 months they get someone in who is better, he'll want to go.”

Mignolet joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2013 and has made 123 appearances for the club thus far.

He was dropped from the team last season for a brief period after a sustained run of poor form, but returned to action soon when reserve goalkeeper Brad Jones suffered an injury.
