Newcastle United have rejected an offer from Napoli for midfielder Moussa Sissoko, but the Italian side are preparing a fresh bid, according to French magazine Le 10 Sport.

French midfielder Sissoko is a key target for Napoli in the current transfer window with the Serie A league leaders wanting to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

But Newcastle appear unwilling to play ball and have knocked back Napoli's first proposal for the midfielder.

Napoli are not prepared to give up on the chase for the former Toulouse midfielder though and are now working hard on a second proposal which they hope will persuade Newcastle to part with the Frenchman.

However, if Steve McClaren's men do signal that they are willing to look at selling Sissoko other clubs could yet enter the race.

Indeed, French champions Paris Saint-Germain are claimed to be keeping tabs on the situation of the midfielder.

The 26-year-old has featured for Newcastle on a regular basis in the current campaign and currently has 23 appearances in all competitions to his name for the Magpies.

A player consistently trusted by McClaren, Newcastle may be reluctant to release Sissoko when they are in the middle of a battle for their Premier League status.
