Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on Alex Iwobi, following his good displays for the first team.

The 19-year-old, who is a product of Arsenal’s youth system, made his senior debut for the club in October, when he started in the 3-0 loss to Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup.

Since then, Iwobi has made seven first team appearances for the Gunners, with the most recent coming in the form of an 18-minute cameo in the goalless Premier League draw with Stoke City last weekend.

And Arteta, who was impressed with the starlet’s performance against the Potters, backed Iwobi to have a bright future at the Emirates Stadium.

"You can see the change in his confidence after being given some minutes in the first team", the Spaniard told the club’s official site.

"The Stoke game was a good example of that. He came on and had an impact straight away. His decision-making was excellent and the game didn't run quicker than him.

"To do that against a tough team in a difficult atmosphere tells you he is improving and moving forwards."

Iwobi, who has also made nine Under-21 Premier League appearances this season, scoring twice and providing as many assists, represented England until Under-18 level before changing his allegiance to Nigeria.

The winger has two senior caps for the African nation to his name.
