Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Tottenham Hotspur for winger Andros Townsend and are pushing ahead to get the deal over the line.

The Magpies view Townsend as a solid addition to their squad as they look to pull away from the relegation zone in the Premier League.

According to the Press Association, Newcastle have managed to agree a fee of £12m with Spurs for the England international.

Townsend has slipped out of the first team picture at White Hart Lane this season since being involved in a bust-up with a member of Mauricio Pochettino's coaching staff.

The winger has continued to play in the Under-21 Premier League, where he has hit the back of the net, to keep his fitness up.

And as such he could slot straight into Steve McClaren's side, giving the team a further fresh look following the capture of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City, also for £12m.

Townsend will hope to feature on a regular basis on Tyneside as he clings to hopes of forcing his way into Roy Hodgson's England squad for Euro 2016.
