Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson feels the Reds would be better suited to playing Manchester City rather than Everton in the League Cup final.

Jurgen Klopp’s team managed to reach the final of the cup competition, following their 6-5 penalty shootout win over Stoke City, after the tie finished 1-1 on aggregate after extra-time last night.

Marko Arnautovic’s first half strike at Anfield cancelled out Jordon Ibe’s goal in the semi-final first leg at the Britannia Stadium, but Simon Mignolet was the Liverpool hero as the Belgian saved two spot kicks in the shootout which helped his team to book a ticket to Wembley.

On the other hand, Manchester City and Everton will battle it out at the Etihad Stadium tonight to join Liverpool in the final, with the first leg having ended 2-1 in favour of the Toffees.

And Lawrenson, who feels a Merseyside derby in the final would be a scrappy affair, wants Manchester City to be Liverpool’s opponents at Wembley.

“Manchester City all day long”, he said on LFC TV after the final whistle, when asked which team he wants Liverpool to play in the final.

“I don’t fancy the prospect [of a Merseyside derby] – imagine if we stunk the place out and Everton beat us. I would rather play Manchester City.

“Manchester City will let us play, against Everton it will be a scrap.

“Manchester City will let us play and it will suit us a bit more.”

While Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw in a Premier League fixture with Everton in October, the Reds thumped Manchester City 4-1 in the league the following month.
