Winston Reid has explained that he has not been frustrated at waiting for his chance to be reinstated in West Ham United’s starting line-up in the league.

The defender made his first Premier League start in over a month in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City at the weekend, following his time on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

During Reid’s absence, the Hammers kept three clean sheets in seven league outings, losing just once.

And the 27-year-old, who revealed that he understood that it would be difficult for him to break into the starting line-up due to the defence’s impressive displays during his injury layoff, however, insisted that he was always ready to step up when called upon by manager Slaven Bilic.

“I haven’t been frustrated [at waiting for my chance]”, Reid told the club’s official site.

“I spoke to the manager and he told me how the situation was. The defence has been doing really well since I have been out and I said to him that it is not a problem, when I am needed he can call upon me to play.

“Everyone wants to play of course, but I know the situation. I trained hard and it gave me a couple of extra weeks to get my fitness back up.”

Reid, who joined West Ham from Danish outfit FC Midtjylland in 2010, has thus far clocked up 153 appearances for the London club, scoring seven times.

The centre-back also has nine caps and a goal for New Zealand to his name.
