Standard Liege coach Yannick Ferrera believes Victor Valdes is on a mission to prove that there still football left in him.

The veteran goalkeeper ended his nightmarish 12-month stay at Manchester United when he joining Standard Liege on a loan deal until the end of the season on Sunday.

Valdes has played just 106 minutes of senior football since suffering a serious knee injury towards the end of his stint at Barcelona in 2014 and will be looking to play more football in Belgium.

Ferrera feels the former Barcelona man still has years of football left in him and believes Valdes should set going to next summer’s European Championship with the Spain squad as a goal for the rest of the season.

The Standard Liege coach told Spanish daily Marca: “He wants to prove he is not dead yet and has years of football left in him.

“Although I have not spoken with him, I don’t know why he can’t go with the Spain team to the European Championship.

“I don’t know whether it is his goal, but I would encourage him to do that.”

Following a bitter dispute with Louis van Gaal sometime last summer, the Spaniard was frozen out of the first team squad and Valdes was training alone at Manchester United’s training base at Carrington for months.

With his contract with the Red Devils expiring at the end of the season, the 34-year-old won’t have to return to Old Trafford following his loan spell in Belgium.
