Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has announced his retirement from football.

The 34-year-old decided to call time on his glittering career after recently leaving Inter Milan by mutual consent.

Vidic, who is most remembered for his time at Old Trafford, joined the club from Spartak Moscow in January 2006.

The defender amassed 300 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils and helped the club to five Premier League titles, three League Cups, one Champions League and one FIFA Club World Cup.

The Serbian left Manchester United for Inter Milan in 2014, but failed to make his mark at the San Siro.

And Vidic, who explained that the injuries he has had in recent years influenced his decision, insisted that it was the right time to announce his retirement.

"The time has come for me to hang up my boots", he told Manchester United’s official site.

"The injuries I have had in the last few years have taken their toll.

"I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big 'thank you' to the fans for their support over the years."

Vidic, who started his senior career at Red Star Belgrade, also earned 34 caps for Serbia, representing the nation in the 2010 World Cup.

The centre-back spent a loan spell at Spartak Subotica during his time at Red Star before joining Spartak Moscow in 2014.
