Joel Matip has been advised that Liverpool would be a "super" move for him to make by a former Schalke team-mate.

The defender is resisting putting pen to paper on a new contract at Schalke amid interest from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who is eyeing scooping him up on a free transfer in the summer when his deal with the Ruhr giants expires.

And if Liverpool put an offer on the table then Matip should not think twice if he wants to go abroad, former Schalke defender Christoph Metzelder believes.

Indeed, the man who spent time at Real Madrid has advised Matip that Liverpool would be a smart move to make.

Metzelder told Der Western: "He is this season by far the strongest defender at Schalke and an anchor.

"Joel is free. If there is interest from England and he wants to have an experience abroad then Liverpool are a super destination for him", the ex-Germany international added.

Metzelder turned out for Klopp's old club Borussia Dortmund until 2007, at which time he left to head for Real Madrid.

The German struggled for injuries and playing time in Spain and headed back home to sign for Schalke in 2010, clocking up three years at the club, during which time he played alongside Matip.
