Newcastle United have joined the chase for striker Seydou Doumbia as they bid to add to their squad before the transfer window slams shut.

The 28-year-old has been linked with leaving Roma this month after returning to the club from a loan spell at CSKA Moscow.

He is of interest to a number of clubs, a group to which Newcastle can now be added, according to Sky Italia.

And Doumbia is claimed to be open to the idea of moving to St. James' Park, seeing it as an appealing destination.

The 28-year-old joined Roma only last year from CSKA Moscow, but was shipped out on loan to his former club in the summer after failing to make an impact in the Italian capital.

Newcastle have already added to their squad this month, but the Magpies are still in the market for further additions.

Steve McClaren's men currently sit in the relegation zone in the Premier League, two points from safety.

They are next in action away at Everton on Wednesday, by which time they could have Doumbia in their ranks.
