Arsene Wenger has confirmed that there is still a possibility that Mathieu Debuchy could leave Arsenal on deadline day.

Following the rise of Hector Bellerin this season, the Frenchman has been reduced to being bit part player at Arsenal and wants to pursue more first team football in the latter half of the campaign ahead of next summer’s European Championship.

Aston Villa are said to be keen to take the full-back to the Midlands during the winter window, but Sunderland are believed to be the ones who have edged ahead in the race to sign the 30-year-old.

Sam Allardyce confirmed his club’s interest in the Arsenal full-back last week, but with only a few hours left in the window, Sunderland are in a race against time to sign Debuchy.

While he feels the move could be unlikely, the Arsenal boss admits that the Frenchman could still leave the Gunners by the time the clock strikes eleven tonight.

When asked about the full-back’s transfer situation, Wenger said in a press conference: “Debuchy is still a possibility.

“At the moment it doesn't look like it, but it is still a possibility.”

Debuchy has made just seven appearances for Arsenal this season and has a contract until 2019 with the club.
