Newcastle United have made an approach to Liverpool for out-of-favour defender Jose Enrique over a deadline day move back to Tyneside, according to the BBC.

The Spaniard joined the Reds from the Magpies in 2011 in a £6m move, but has struggled for playing time on Merseyside in recent years and has been a fringe player in the last couple of seasons.

He played a grand total of 203 minutes of Premier League football last term, and other then three FA Cup apperances, he has not played in the league thus far in the present campaign.

It has been suggested that Newcastle are willing to take him back to Tyneside and have approached the Reds to reach an agreement over a deal that will see the Spaniard leave Anfield.

Liverpool are happy to let the player return to his former club, and the decision now rests with Enrique, 30, and whether he wants to wear the Newcastle United colours again or wait until the summer to assess his options.
