Everton winger Aiden McGeady has signed for Championship outfit Sheffied Wednesday on loan until the end of the season.

The 29-year-old, who was also linked with Leeds, had fallen down the pecking order at Goodison Park and had managed just a solitary outing in the League Cup this season.

The Republic of Ireland international was signed by the Toffees from Russian outfit Spartak Moscow in January of 2014 and McGeady went on to make 43 appearances for the Merseyside club in two years.

McGeady has managed 79 appearances for his national team since making his debut in 2004 and has scored five goals during the process.

The Owls beat competition from another Championship outfit for the signature of the 29-year-old winger, with Leeds United boss Steve Evans having admitted his interest in the player, though it is unknown if the Whites were the team in question.

The Hillsborough outfit’s manager Carlos Carvalhal has expressed his delight at the signing of the 29-year-old and also revealed that he tried to sign the winger during his time at Sporting Lisbon in 2009/10.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Carvalhal said: “I'm very happy to bring McGeady here, he has extra quality and I know him very well. He will help us, absolutely [for] sure.

“I tried to bring him to Sporting earlier in his career, he has a lot of quality and now looks forward to the challenge here.”

The Owls currently find themselves in seventh position in the Championship, one point off sixth placed Birmingham City, albeit with a game in hand.
