Arsene Wenger insists he cannot fault his side's effort after Arsenal could only draw 0-0 at home against Southampton and slipped down to fourth spot in the Premier League as a result.

Arsenal struggled to get going at the Emirates Stadium, but did still have chances, one of the best coming through Mesut Ozil, who picked up an Olivier Giroud header and hit a shot which was pushed past the post by Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Southampton had their own efforts, Dusan Tadic seeing a shot saved by Petr Cech, while Oriol Romeu hit a good shot which just went over the crossbar.

On the stroke of half time there was a scramble in the Southampton box, but Arsenal's efforts were blocked.

In the second half Giroud went close, Forster being equal to it. Gabriel and Laurent Koscielny also had chances, but could not find the back of the net.

Six minutes injury time was played, but Arsenal could not find a goal and had to make do with a point.

For Wenger, no one could accuse his side of lacking effort, though he believes the Gunners had enough chances to claim all three points.

"We put the energy level in and created chances. I cannot fault the team on that front", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"It is not only luck. I don't believe too much in luck. We feel disappointed and guilty.

"In a game like that when you create chances you want to win. We had the chances to win it. But their goalkeeper kept them in it.

"You have to always think the opponent will play well and despite that still score.

"We had all kind of chances and it looked like it would come. But sometimes you lose these games", Wenger added.

Tottenham's 3-0 win away at Norwich means Spurs have now jumped above their fierce rivals into third place on goal difference.
