Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has insisted that it has been difficult for him to stay positive during yet another long term injury absence.

Wilshere suffered a hairline fracture to his left tibia on the day before Arsenal’s Community Shield game against Chelsea in August 2015, after a strong challenge in training and has been sidelined ever since.

The midfielder was expected to return to the pitch in a month or two, but as the pain persisted the 24-year-old had to undergo surgery, which has kept him sidelined.

Before the Southampton game, Arsene Wenger had confirmed that the midfielder is expected to return in four weeks.

The 24-year-old has confirmed that he has returned to the pitch and that his recovery is going well.

He reiterated that it is difficult to get back to the level of playing in the Premier League, but feels that he is slowly getting there.

Wilshere, who has suffered a host of injuries during his career, insists that it has been difficult to stay positive in testing times, but the hope of returning to the pitch and getting involved with the team has kept him going.

Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website, Wilshere said: “[My recovery is] going well.

“I’m back on the pitch and I’m just trying to build my fitness up because everyone knows how tough it is to play in the Premier League. I’m working on it and I’m slowly getting there.

"Sometimes it’s been difficult to stay positive, especially after the injuries that I’ve had which have been frustrating, but as the injury goes, you get closer to full fitness and you see the light at the end of the tunnel, then you start to think about coming back and getting involved in the team."

Wilshere will be hoping to complete his recovery and help his side’s faltering title challenge, which has seen the Gunners drop down to fourth in the league table.
