Manchester United winger Jesse Lingard expects more youngsters to break through the ranks to the first team at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old winger has made 18 appearances for the first team this season, chipping in with four goals and two assists.

Lingard opened the scoring for Louis van Gaal’s side in the 3-0 win over Stoke City on Tuesday night, heading home 19-year-old Cameron Borthwick-Jackson’s cross from the left wing in the 14th minute.

It was the first time the Red Devils had scored in the first half of a game in 12 attempts.

Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney also got on the scoresheet as Van Gaal’s side recorded a comprehensive victory.

Lingard believes that Van Gaal likes to promote youngsters and is confident that the next batch of academy products are ready to break through to the first team.

Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website, Lingard said: "The manager likes youth and when we’ve had a chance we’ve taken it.

"So I don’t see why the next batch can't come through and do the same."

The Red Devils have closed the gap on fourth placed Arsenal to just five points and will be hoping to string together a run of good performances to make it to the Champions League spots.
