Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal feels if his side can win at Chelsea on Sunday, then they will back in the title race.

A harrowing run of form in December, coupled with some shoddy results in January led to Manchester United losing sight of the chasing pack, and they are currently fifth in the league table, ten points off league leaders Leicester City.

However, an FA Cup win over Derby County and a convincing dismantling of an impressive Stoke City team at Old Trafford on Tuesday night showed what the Red Devils are still capable of when they come good.

And Van Gaal feels if his side can take all three points from a struggling Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, then Manchester United will be back in the hunt for the Premier League title.

He believes that momentum is finally on their side after two convincing wins, but admits that to get back into the mix, they need to show more consistency as anything is still possible in this season’s title race.

The Manchester United boss said in a press conference: "I feel that if we beat Chelsea – and that is not simple it is very difficult as they don't lose anymore with Guus Hiddink – then I think our competition and our league shall start again and that is very important.

“Michael Carrick said that to me today and I had the same feeling: the competition is still not finished. It is not finished for Manchester United and not for the other teams.

"We have the feeling because we are winning two times in a row and with sparkling football, goals and clean sheets. This against opponents in great form – Stoke City played Liverpool off the pitch in the Capital One Cup, for example, even though they lost with penalties.

“We have to show it though, in a row of games that you win because in this competition anything is possible."
