Leeds United legend Eddie Gray believes most clubs should do the bulk of their business in the summer window, and January signings should only be made if there is an emergency.

While the Whites signed Mustapha Carayol and Toumani Diagouraga during the January window, they also failed to get a few deals over the line during the last hours of deadline day, which left fans disappointed.

Steve Evans has already spoken about the difficulty of signing players in January and how the winter window is always over inflated. Gray agrees with the Leeds boss and feels that signing quality players during this time of the year is often a thankless task.

He also feels that clubs should not wait until January to sort out their squad problems, and should do the bulk of their business in the summer window in order to be prepared for the season ahead.

The Leeds legend said on LUTV: “It’s always a difficult time to try and get players into your football club in January.

“I think you should do all your main business in the summer, and to me the January window is more or less if an emergency crops up.

“If you are not ready to go at the start of the season, you are not going to be ready in January.”

Evans has already stated his desire to turn Leeds into promotion contenders next season and is expecting the club to back him with the finances in the summer.
