Alex Song has warned West Ham against starting sluggishly in Premier League games, following his side’s 1-0 loss to Southampton at the weekend.

The Hammers, who went into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on 2nd February, started poorly at St Mary’s Stadium and fell behind to a ninth minute goal by Maya Yoshida.

Although Slaven Bilic’s team then took control of the game, the London outfit failed to find the equaliser, even after the Saints were reduced to 10 men early in the second half following Victor Wanyama’s sending off.

And Song, who blamed the loss on West Ham’s lacklustre opening 15 minutes at Southampton, wants his side not to repeat the same mistakes again in future games.

“I think we've a big regret”, he told the club’s official site.

“In the first 15 minutes of the game, we didn't start the match as you have to. That's already happened a lot.

“Afterwards, we came back into the match. As a whole, we dominated the match. It was just those first 15 minutes. We were sluggish and we conceded a goal.

“Then, it was tough. We played eleven against ten and they sat back.

"We did absolutely everything to score and take a point, but unfortunately it wasn't to be. We have to look to the future and do things differently.”

West Ham, who are currently sixth in the Premier League with 39 points from 25 games, will next face Liverpool in an FA Cup replay at Upton Park tomorrow.
