Rangers assistant manager David Weir has reiterated that the league remains his side’s main priority, but insists that the Gers are almost equally focused on progressing in the cup competitions as the exposure from such outings are vital.

The Gers secured a 0-0 draw against Premiership outfit Kilmarnock in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

It was Rangers’ second encounter against a Premiership side this season and Mark Warburton’s side have failed to win either of the two games.

Former Rangers’ player Lee McCulloch, who is the interim manager of Kilmarnock, presided over his first game in charge of the Rugby Park outfit as his side earned a replay against Warburton’s side.

Weir made over 150 appearances for the Ibrox outfit during his five-year spell with the Gers and is now assistant manager of Warburton’s side, who comfortably sit at the top of the Scottish Championship.

Weir insists that the Gers are expected to win every competition that they participate in and wants the players to gain experience from semi-final and final of these competitions.

Speaking in an interview with Rangers TV, Weir said: “Definitely any trophy that you enter as Rangers, you are expected to win and this is no different.

“So league’s no. 1 priority, always is, but the cups are very close second because we have all had the experiences of going to the games.

“You know being involved in cup finals and semi-finals and the big games.

“Rangers need to be involved in as many of those as they can.”

Warburton’s side travel to Recreation Park Alloa to take on Alloa Athletic on 13th February in their next match.
