Sunderland loanee Steven Fletcher has explained that he was thrilled to witness the atmosphere at the Stade Velodrome following his Marseille debut in the 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend.

The striker, who joined the French club on a loan deal until the end of the season during the January transfer window, came on as a 80th minute substitute in place of Michy Batshuayi, with PSG being 2-1 up at that point in the game.

But Fletcher failed to make an impact as Marseille went on to lose the fixture, thereby smoothing PSG’s path to a fourth consecutive Ligue 1 title.

However, the Scotland international insisted that although he relished the atmosphere at Stade Velodrome, he was disappointed to come out empty-handed against the French champions.

“The atmosphere was fantastic, I have never experienced anything like that”, he was quoted as saying by French outlet Top Mercato.

“It was great to see the fans and I'm happy to have played a few minutes.

“I'm a little disappointed with the result; I think we played well, especially in the second half."

Fletcher, whose present contract with Sunderland is set to expire in the summer, fell down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light before his exit, as the Scot clocked up just 253 minutes over 16 Premier League games this season.
