Schalke are set to announce over the course of the coming week whether Joel Matip will be remaining at the club.

The centre-back has been continually linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in the summer when his contract with Schalke expires.

Schalke have been working hard to convince Matip to put pen to paper on an extension, but so far talks with the player's representatives have failed to bring about a resolution.

Now, according to Reviersport, Schalke are set to announce whether Matip will remain at the club beyond the end of the season later this week.

The 24-year-old has been lauded for his performances in the heart of the Schalke defence this season, but has also been advised that Liverpool would be a good destination if he wishes to head abroad.

Indeed, former Schalke defender Christoph Metzelder recently explained: "Joel is free. If there is interest from England and he wants to have an experience abroad then Liverpool are a super destination for him."

Matip came through the youth ranks at Schalke and has spent his entire senior career with the Ruhr club.

Despite being born in Germany, the 24-year-old represents Cameroon at international level and has won 27 caps for the African nation.
