Former Celtic midfielder Lubo Moravcik feels Hoops fans must expect the club to compete in the Champions League every season.

The Scottish giants, who endured a poor campaign on the European front this season, failed to qualify for the Champions League after losing 4-3 on aggregate to Swedish club Malmo.

Celtic then failed to win any of their six group stages matches in the Europa League, losing three of those, as Ronny Deila’s team were unsuccessful in reaching the knockout rounds of the tournament.

And Moravcik, who admitted that it is impossible for Celtic to win the Champions League and improbable for the club to cross the group stage hurdle, however, believes the Scottish champions should be able to qualify for the elite continental competition every season.

“It's Celtic's duty to be in the Champions League every year”, he was quoted as saying by the Scotland Herald.

"If you play against a team like Sion, you have to go through. That's true. Celtic will never win the Champions League, to go through from the groups is very hard.

“But to qualify, finish third and qualify for the Europa League knockout stage is possible. That must be the objective for Celtic.

“They should be able to do that. Sometimes there will be bad luck. But Celtic fans must expect the Champions League every year.

“You have to have that and it is possible. This year they were 3-1 up against Malmo, made a mistake and it changed the tie.

“They were comfortable and then it changed. Psychologically it's hard and that was down to one mistake. The players must concentrate more.”

Moravcik, who played at Celtic Park between 1998 and 2002, helped the club to two league titles, two Scottish Cups and one League Cup.
