West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna is looking forward to the next step after scoring the late winner against Liverpool last night.

The FA Cup fourth round replay looked destined for penalties, until Ogbonna’s head met an inch perfect free kick from Dimitri Payet in the 121st minute to find the bottom left hand corner of Simon Mignolet’s goal.

West Ham remained unbeaten against Liverpool this season, and booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup, courtesy of the Italian defender’s first goal for the club.

The defender, who joined West Ham last summer from Juventus, admits that scoring such an important goal in front of the home fans was an exciting moment for him and credited Payet for such a beautiful ball inside the box.

The Italian told the club’s official website: “It was my first goal for West Ham and in front of our supporters, so I am really happy for my teammates, for everybody. I really enjoyed it.

“I’m still excited, and I want to enjoy this moment. It’s unbelievable. It was a great ball from Dimitri, and Andy [Carroll], [James] Collins, we all could score [with service like that].”

While he admits that he and his team-mates are enjoying every bit of the success against Liverpool, he also stressed the importance of keeping their focus as they approach a defining part of the season.

“It’s a good result for us and we have to look forward to the next step now. We’ll enjoy this moment, but we will keep our feet on the ground.”

The Hammers will take on Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park in the fifth round of the FA Cup later this month.
