Andy Halliday has backed Rangers’ ability to etch out positive results despite not playing the best football.

Since their 4-1 thumping of Livingston in the Scottish Championship in mid-January, the Gers have managed to score just four goals in as many games in all competitions.

Rangers have managed to win three of those four encounters, with the sole draw coming in the form of a goalless stalemate against Premiership outfit Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup at the weekend.

And Halliday, who insisted that the glorious yesteryear Rangers team and big clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United from across the border also won ugly when required, feels a lack of goals should not be a concern as long as the club keep churning out positive results.

“When you look at teams of old – Rangers teams of old and teams that have won the Premiership – the likes of Man United and Chelsea, you all win ugly and it always seems to be this time of year when you start to play a lot of games and you maybe pick up a few niggling injuries and the pitches are pretty heavy”, he told the club’s official site.

“Maybe it’s just an accumulation of things that maybe have led to us not putting in performances that aren’t maybe just as good as what we’ve been used to this year.

“The main thing though is results. If you look at Raith, in the first half I thought we played really well – probably the best half of football we’ve played for a few weeks, and the only thing it lacked was probably the number of goals that we had been scoring in the previous weeks of the season.”

Rangers, who are currently eight points clear at the top of the table, albeit having played a game more than second-placed Hibernian, will next face Alloa Athletic in the league on Saturday.
